First double bass of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI since 2019, Francesco Platoni combines the commitment in the orchestra with an intense chamber and solo activity.
Winner of numerous competitions, he was awarded the first prize at the International Competition “Valentino Bucchi” Rome 2011 edition and was awarded the third prize at the International Double Bass Competition BASS 2010 Berlin Youth category at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. In June 2013 he won the third prize in the Solo Competition organized by the International Double Bass Society (ISB) at the Eastman School in Rochester (USA).
He has been invited to play with the EUYO (European Youth Orchestra) for the 2012/2013 season and since 2014 he has been a member of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI based in Turin where from 2019 he will play the role of first double bass.
He has also been invited to collaborate as principal and co-principal doublebass with BBC Symphony Orchestra of London, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra del Teatro La Scala, Filarmonica della Scala di Milano, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Filarmonica di Milano, Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, Orchestra del Teatro Regio di Torino, Filarmonica di Torino.
He participates in the activity of the OSN RAI group La Mole Armonica since 2015 with which he ventures into the baroque repertoire on original instruments. His passion for new music has led him to collaborate with important personalities of the contemporary scene such as Sofia Gubaidulina, Hans Werner Henze, Gavin Bryars, Terry Riley, Stefano Scodanibbio and Julio Estrada, among others.
He has played with Ensemble Musikfabrik (Cologne) and is a founding member of the double bass ensemble Ludus Gravis, dedicated to the execution of contemporary repertoire with which he has participated in concerts for some of the most prestigious festivals in Italy (Biennale di Venezia, Rassegna di Nuova Musica di Macerata, Ravenna Festival, Società Aquilana dei Concerti Barattelli, Associazione Alessandro Scarlatti Napoli, Festival AngelicA Bologna, Milano Musica, I Concerti del Quirinale – Rome) and abroad (GAIDA – Vilnius, Imago Dei – Krems, Music of Changes – Klaipeda, Musica D’Hoy – Madrid, UNICUM – Lubiana, Borealis – Bergen, Vinterfestuka – Narvik, Suså Festival – Nevsted, Lux Aeterna – Hamburg, Ad Lucem Festival – Riga, Ciclo de Conciertòs de Musica Contemporanea FBBVA – Bilbao, Istituto di Cultura Italiano di Madrid).
He regularly plays the repertoire with piano collaborating with Federico Nicoletta. In 2018, the musicians receive from SIAE and Italian Ministry of Artistic and Cultural Heritage a special contribution within the project Sillumina to make a national tour.
He has made radio productions for Rai RadioTre, BBC Radio3, Radio CEMAT, RTV Slo and recordings for ECM, WERGO and Sony and has been invited to take part in juries of national and international interpretation and orchestral competitions.
He studied double bass with Daniele Roccato and Stefano Scodanibbio and in 2011 he graduated with honors and honorable mention at the Conservatory of Music “F. Morlacchi” in Perugia. In the same year he graduated in electronic engineering with a score of 110 cum laude receiving an award as the best graduate of the department. During his studies he participated in the masterclasses of Bozo Paradzik and Alois Posch.
He is currently teaching at the Conservatory of Music “B. Marcello” in Venice.
Keeping the passion for computer science and audio recording, in his spare time he also loves to dedicate himself to reading and walking in the mountains.
